Who Was The First Minister Of Police Affairs In Nigeria?
David Jemibewo was the first Minister of Police Affairs when Nigeria returned to democracy in 1999. He served in this position until 2000 under President Olusegun Obasanjo. Jemibewon had a notable military career.
He was a Major General in the Nigerian Army and served as the military governor of both Western State and Oyo State during different periods in the 1970s.
Born on July 20, 1940, in Iyah-Gbedde, Kogi State, Jemibewon received his education in Nigeria and abroad, including studying law at the University of Lagos.
After retiring from the military, he opened a successful legal practice and was involved in various business ventures, including palm oil trading. During his time as the Minister of Police Affairs, Jemibewon introduced a five-year plan to improve the Nigerian police force.
He added 33,000 police officers to help enhance internal security and established the Nigeria Police Service Commission to oversee police activities. This was an important step toward modernizing the police and making them more accountable to the people.

Ibrahim Gaidam is the current Minister of Police Affairs in Nigeria, taking office on August 21, 2023, under President Bola Tinubu. Gaidam had a long political career, having served as the Senator for Yobe East from June 11, 2019, until he became the minister.
He was also the Governor of Yobe State from January 27, 2009, to May 29, 2019. Gaidam was born on September 15, 1956, in Bukarti, which is in the Yobe State region of Nigeria.
He had his education at Borno Teachers’ College, where he earned a Teachers’ Certificate, and later attended Ahmadu Bello University. At Ahmadu Bello University, he earned a Diploma in Accountancy and a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy.
Gaidam is a member of the Certified Public Accountants of Nigeria. His career began as an accountant in different government ministries. He was the assistant director of finance and later the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, as well as the Commissioner for Commerce and Industries.
However, he returned to the civil service and served in several roles before entering politics. Gaidam became the Deputy Governor of Yobe State in 2007 and was sworn in as the Governor in 2009 after the previous governor passed away.
He was elected for a full term in 2011 and re-elected in 2015. During his time as governor, Gaidam focused on various initiatives to improve security and stability in the region, especially during the rise of Boko Haram.
