Originally part of the Western Region, Ondo State was established to improve local governance and promote development. In 1991, the state’s population was recorded at 2,249,548 during the national census.

For example, the metro area population, which was 460,000 in 2022, increased to 475,000 in 2023 and 492,000 in 2024. This shows a growth rate of 3.58% between 2023 and 2024, with a shift toward urbanization as more people move to cities for economic opportunities. In 2025, the population of Ondo State is projected to reach around 5.76 million.
