The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development in Nigeria was initially part of the Ministry of Works before becoming a standalone entity under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
This change occurred in 2023 due to a renewed focus on housing and urban development. However, the ministry’s main goal is to provide affordable housing, promote sustainable urban development, and provide easy access to land for citizens.

Who Is The Newly Appointed Minister Of Housing And Urban Development In Nigeria?
Yusuf Abdullahi Ata is the new Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development in Nigeria. He is a Nigerian politician, economist, and teacher from Kano State.
Born on June 22, 1962, in Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State, Ata has had a long career in both teaching and politics. He attended Fagge Primary School from 1968 to 1975 and later Aminu Kano Community Commercial College, where he studied between 1975 and 1980.
Ata earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics in 1984 and a Master’s degree in Development Studies in 2001, both from Bayero University, Kano.
Ata began his professional career as a teacher before joining the Kano State Ministry of Education in 1992 as an inspector in business education.
In 1997, he moved to the Kano State Housing Cooperation and worked as a Principal Planning Officer. His career in the civil service ended in 1998 when he decided to pursue politics full-time.
In 1999, Ata was elected to represent the Fagge Constituency in the Kano State House of Assembly under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Although he lost his seat in the 2003 elections, Ata regained it in 2011 and was re-elected in 2015.
During his third term, he became the Majority Leader of the Kano State House of Assembly. In 2017, Ata was elected Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly after Kabiru Alhassan Rurum resigned.
However, his time as Speaker ended in 2018 when he was impeached due to claims that he could not manage the affairs of the House effectively. After leaving the House of Assembly, Ata faced more challenges in his political career. He contested again in the 2019 general elections but was defeated.
Yet, his years of experience in governance and policy-making earned him a role in Nigeria’s federal cabinet in 2024 when he was appointed Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development.
In this new position, Ata is expected to use his background in economics and planning to address challenges in housing and urban development across the country.
