Who Is The New Minister Of Innovation, Science, And Technology In Nigeria?

The new Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology in Nigeria is Uche Nnaji, appointed by President Bola Tinubu on August 16, 2023.

As someone who understands both business and politics, Uche Nnaji is seen as a key player in pushing Nigeria’s development forward.

Uche Nnaji was born on June 16, 1963, in Akpugo, a town in Enugu State, Nigeria. He grew up in a family of four children and is the eldest of his siblings.

His early education took place in Enugu, where he attended both primary and secondary schools. Later, he went to the University of Nigeria Nsukka and studied Biochemistry and Microbiology.

Before getting into politics, Nnaji made a name for himself in the healthcare industry. He was involved in importing and selling medical equipment.

In fact, he was one of the first to introduce computerized tomography (CT) scans to the country during the 1980s. His business success wasn’t just limited to medical equipment.

He also handled contracts related to plumbing and sanitary projects at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital. In addition to his work in healthcare, Nnaji started a company called Signal Nigeria Limited.

This company is involved in construction and marine services, adding to his wide range of business experiences. He has also served on the board of the Federal Capital Development Authority.

Nnaji’s political career began in 1999 when he was elected as a senator for Enugu East under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Although he later left the position, he remained active in politics. In 2023, he ran for governor of Enugu State as a candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), though he lost the race to Peter Mbah of the PDP.

As the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji is responsible for promoting research and innovation that can help Nigeria grow. His will focus on using science and technology to improve different areas, such as agriculture and energy.

For example, he works on initiatives that boost agricultural productivity by using technology. He is also involved in projects that aim to make Nigeria more energy-efficient through research on sustainable energy sources.

One of the most important parts of his job is to encourage innovation within Nigeria. This includes supporting local research so that new technologies can be developed right in the country.

By doing this, Nnaji hopes to help Nigeria reduce its reliance on foreign technology and instead build its capacity for technological growth.
