Who Is The New Minister Of Information And National Orientation In Nigeria?

The current Minister of Information and National Orientation in Nigeria is Mohammed Idris Malagi, appointed in August 2023 by President Bola Tinubu. He replaced Lai Mohammed, who previously held the position.

Malagi is known for his career in media and public relations, as well as his contributions to journalism in Nigeria. Malagi was born on May 2, 1966, in the Gbako local government area of Niger State.

He attended primary school in Kontagora, and after completing his secondary education at GSS Rijau, he studied English at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, graduating in 1987.

He furthered his studies with a master’s degree in English from Bayero University Kano in 1995. As a professional in the media industry, Malagi is most well-known for founding Blueprint, a popular Nigerian newspaper that publishes in both English and Hausa.

He has served as the chairman and publisher of The Blueprint since its launch in 2011, and his leadership has been critical in growing the publication.

Besides that, he is the chairman of Kings Broadcasting Network, which owns WE 106.5 FM, a prominent radio station in Abuja.

His involvement in the media industry goes beyond these ventures, as he also served as the general secretary of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria (NPAN).

Politically, Malagi is a committed member of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He has been active in Nigerian politics and even ran for governor of Niger State in the 2023 elections. Although he did not win, his influence within the party is notable.

His work as the Director of Strategic Communications for the APC’s Tinubu-Shettima Presidential Campaign Council helped the media strategy for the successful campaign of Bola Tinubu, Nigeria’s current president.

In addition to his professional achievements, Malagi holds the traditional title of Kakaaki Nupe, an honor that acknowledges his philanthropic efforts and impact on his community.

He has been recognized for his leadership in the media industry and was awarded the Milestone Recognition Media Icons in Nigeria award by the Nigeria Union of Journalists in 2022.
