What Is The Capital Of Ondo State, Nigeria?

Akure is the capital and largest city of Ondo State. With a population estimated at 774,000, it is a crowded city of culture, commerce, and history.

The origins of Akure trace back to ancient times, with rock engravings dating back to pre-Mesolithic periods and the discovery of West Africa’s oldest Homo sapiens fossil around 11,000 years ago.

According to oral tradition, the modern Akure Kingdom was established by Omoremilekun Asodeboyede, a descendant of Oduduwa, who founded the city after passing a rigorous test set by Oduduwa himself.

Akure has developed into a center of governance and commerce.

In 1915, it became the headquarters of a new province formed by merging the divisions of Owo, Ondo, and Ekiti by the colonial government. Since 1976, it has served as the capital of Ondo State.

The city’s cultural value is clear in its lively markets, such as Oja Oba, and its iconic landmarks, including the Deji’s Palace, which has over 16 courtyards serving various purposes.

The Deji of Akure, supported by six high chiefs, presides over the city, with the leopard serving as its totem. Economically, Akure succeeds as a trading center for agricultural produce like cocoa, yam, cassava, and maize.

Additionally, the city has educational institutions like the Federal University of Technology Akure and outstanding secondary schools.

Akure’s tropical humid climate with separate wet and dry seasons shapes its weather routines, with temperatures ranging from 20.5°C to 30.5°C throughout the year. The city experiences a rainy season from February to November, with September being the wettest month.

In sports, Akure has a stadium with a capacity for 16,000 spectators and is the home base of the Sunshine Stars FC, a prominent team in the Nigeria Premier League.
