Who Was The First President Of Haiti?
The first president of Haiti was Alexandre Pétion, who served from 1806 until he died in 1818. Pétion took over after the assassination of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, who was the leader who declared Haiti’s independence from France in 1804.
Dessalines had held the title of Governor-General before he was killed. After his death, Haiti was divided into two regions. Pétion ruled the southern part, while Henri Christophe controlled the northern region.
However, Alexandre Pétion was born in 1770. His father was a wealthy plantation owner, and his mother was a free woman of color.
Pétion was well-educated in France and later returned to Haiti, which was then known as Saint-Domingue, to manage his father’s estate.
He got involved in the Haitian Revolution, a fight against French colonial rule. After Dessalines was killed, Pétion became a leader who worked to create a fairer government and improve life for former slaves.
During Pétion’s presidency, he focused on stabilizing the country and helping people who had been enslaved. He introduced policies to divide the land among former slaves so they could grow their crops.
This gave these people a sense of ownership and independence. Pétion also worked on improving education and building infrastructure, which helped Haiti become more organized and functional.
His time in office was seen as more stable compared to the earlier chaotic and harsh rule of Dessalines. Pétion’s leadership style was different from many others of his time.
He worked with different groups and tried to bring people together. His approach helped to unite the country and make it more inclusive. When Pétion died in 1818, his influence did not disappear.
He is remembered for his efforts in establishing Haiti’s democratic ideals and his contributions to the early development of the nation.
Even though Haiti went through more political troubles after his death, Pétion’s vision for a more democratic and united society continued to be an important part of Haiti’s goals.

Who Is The New President Of Haiti?
Haiti does not have a single president. Instead, the country is being led by a Transitional Presidential Council.
This council was formed because the previous Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, resigned due to increasing gang violence and political problems. Haiti’s political situation has been very unstable for a while.
The last president, Jovenel Moïse, was assassinated in July 2021. Since then, the country has struggled with leadership issues and severe problems caused by gangs.
In response to this chaos, the Transitional Presidential Council was set up to lead Haiti until new elections could be organized.
The council will be in charge until February 7, 2026, and their main job is to manage the country and prepare for new elections, which have been delayed because of ongoing instability.
On May 29, 2024, Garry Conille was chosen as the new prime minister by the Transitional Presidential Council. Conille is experienced in Haitian politics; he was the prime minister from October 2011 to May 2012 under President Michel Martelly.
His new role comes at a very difficult time. The gangs control much of Port-au-Prince, the capital city, and have caused a lot of violence and suffering.
Reports say that gangs control about 80% of the city, which has led to many problems, including people being forced out of their homes.
