How Has Zamfara State’s Population Changed Over the Years?

In the 11th century, Zamfara was once part of the ancient Hausa city-states and became an important kingdom known for trade, culture, and governance.

In the early 19th century, Zamfara became part of the Sokoto Caliphate after the Islamic jihad led by Usman Dan Fodio.

During the colonial period, it was under Northern Nigeria and later became part of the North-Western State and Sokoto State after independence.

Zamfara gained full statehood on October 1, 1996, during General Sani Abacha’s regime, with Gusau as its capital. Since then, the state population has grown massively.

In the 2006 national census, Zamfara recorded a population of about 3.5 million people. By 2012, the population was estimated to have grown to 4.5 million, with an annual growth rate of about 3.7%.

In 2022, projections estimated Zamfara’s population at around 5,833,500, with a population density of 170.2 people per square kilometer.

By 2023, the population was estimated at 6.05 million, and in 2024, it grew to about 6.27 million. In 2025, projections suggest that Zamfara’s population will reach approximately 6.5 million.
