Who Was The First Military Governor Of Kebbi State?
Major General Patrick Aziza, born on December 23, 1947, was the first military Governor of Kebbi State, Nigeria. Kebbi State was created from Sokoto State on August 27, 1991, during the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida.
Aziza, a Nigerian military officer, served as the governor from August 28, 1991, until January 1992. He was succeeded by Abubakar Musa, who became the civilian governor at the start of the aborted Nigerian Third Republic.
Aziza was born in Okpe Local Government Area in Delta State. He had his secondary education in Ibadan before joining the Nigerian Army.
Aziza participated in the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970) and later attended the Nigeria Defence Academy, Kaduna, graduating in 1970.
Throughout his military career, Aziza had different positions of command and responsibility, including serving as the Brigade Commander of the Amphibious Brigade in Calabar.
In addition to his role as the first military governor of Kebbi State, Aziza played important roles in Nigerian military and political affairs.
He was a member of the group of officers that planned the coup through which General Sani Abacha took power.
Aziza chaired the Special Military Tribunal that convicted former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Major General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua for their alleged involvement in a 1995 coup plot.
After his tenure as governor, Aziza served as Minister of Communications and later as Minister of Commerce and Tourism during various military regimes.
However, with the return to democracy in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, Aziza retired from the army in June 1999, along with other former military administrators.
