How Has Nasarawa State’s Population Changed Over The Years?
Nasarawa State, located in the North Central region of Nigeria was created on October 1, 1996, from the western part of Plateau State.
At that time, Nasarawa had an estimated population of about 1.2 million people, based on the 1991 census data. This was the beginning of a new phase for the state, which was still developing in many ways.
By 2006, the population of Nasarawa had risen to approximately 1,869,377. The growth was affected by migration from other regions of Nigeria, as well as natural population growth.
Also, the state’s annual growth rate during this period was about 3.0%. In the years that followed, the population continued to grow steadily.
By 2016, estimates suggested that the population had reached around 2.5 million. And, by 2022, projections placed Nasarawa’s population at about 2,886,000, with an annual growth rate of approximately 2.8% since 2006.
Nasarawa’s population continued to grow due to urbanization and the economic opportunities available in the state. Now in 2025, it is estimated that the population of Nasarawa will rise to around 3.1 million, showing an approximate 8% increase from 2022.
